Colombian President, Juan Santos, on Wednesday said a peace deal would unlikely be reached if the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrillas breaks the unilateral ceasefire declared on July 20.

“Insurgents must surrender their weapons and be subjected to some kind of justice or there will be no peace agreement as people are losing confidence in the ongoing peace process held in Havana,’’ Santos said.

Santos denied allegations that he agreed a `hidden bilateral ceasefire’ with the FARC when he ordered on Saturday to suspend bombings against rebel camps across the South American nation.

He said that he regretted that some opposition leaders had criticised him for his efforts aimed at stopping the conflict.

After months of stagnation at the negotiating table and fighting on the battlefield, Colombian government and FARC guerrillas resumed peace talks in Cuba, seeking to end the country’s 50-year conflict.
