Council vice-chair, others arraigned for allegedly assaulting policemen in Delta

Delta State Police Command has arraigned the Vice Chairman of Aniocha South Local Council, Amaka Anigwe, one Samuel Agu and two others at Asaba Magistrate Court for allegedly assaulting policemen on official duty.

Delta State police boss, Mohammed Ali

Spokesperson for the command, DSP Bright Edafe, said the suspects were arraigned at Magistrate Court 1, in Asaba on a 16-counts charge and remanded at Ogwashi-Uku and Agbor Correctional centres.

Edafe also said that the case has been adjourned till March 16, for a hearing.

The Guardian learnt that the policemen on stop and search duty along Nnebisi road by Kowen plaza, stopped Anigwe, to search her Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) marked Delta Asaba-33HK, but she refused to stop.

Police sources said when Anigwe was stopped by policemen at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, she was peeved, and quickly alighted from her vehicle to challenge the policemen by shouting and insulting them, saying, “do you know who you are talking to?”

Sources said her actions infuriated the officers, who stood their grounds and this led to a hot argument, which resulted in an unexpected slap on the face of one of the officers.

“As the council’s vice-chair was ranting, it was learnt, one Samuel Agu joined her and also slapped one of the officers.

“Two others joined to support the lady who was carried away, paying no attention to anyone, while the policemen were busy filming the scene and calling their men to rescue the situation.

“The security men were provoked to the point of shooting but calmed themselves down.

“They thereafter called for reinforcement before the attackers were subdued, arrested and were taken to “A” Division in Asaba from there charged to court,” the source added.
