Court grants N100,000 bail to woman for allegedly chasing out niece,9, over stolen meat

A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday granted N100,000 bail to one Mercy Akinsode, 46, who chased out her nine-year-old niece for allegedly stealing a piece of meat.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Soladoye, who granted the accused the bail added that she must provide two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to July 6 for mention.

Akinsode, who resides at Bajulaiye Road, Somolu in Lagos State , is facing a charge of child abandonment.

The Prosecutor, ASP Godwin Anyanwu, had earlier told the court that the accused chased out her late sister’s nine-year-old daughter for stealing a piece of meat.

Anyanwu said that the accused committed the offence on June 5 at about 8 p.m., at her residence.

He said that the victim was brought to Lagos from Ekiti some years ago after the death of her mother to stay with her aunt.

“The family nanny, one Esther, had brought some raw meat from the market and directed the victim to prepare it.

“During the process ,the nanny saw the victim eating part of the meat and reported her to her aunt.

“The aunt after scolding her niece drove her out of the house.

“However, a good Samaritan saw the victim wandering around in a market, and took her to the Alade Police Station, Somolu.’’

The prosecution said that the offence contravened Section 247 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge leveled against her.
