At the eighth public lecture of Crawford University in Faith City, Igbesa, Ogun State, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Atlantic Marine and Oilfield Services, Limited, Nigeria, Mr. Humphrey Okposo, highlighted the essential role of history in proffering solutions to challenges facing humanity in terms of survival, educational process, adaptation to changes in life,economy or needs and leadership.
Okposo said: “To overcome the mirage of challenges facing humans, people, especially leaders, must fall back to history for a cue to solutions.”
The lecture entitled “The History of Our Future: A Concept of Business Leadership,” held at the University’s multipurpose hall, Okposo emphasised the importance of building, projecting and sustaining relationships in leadership.
He stated, “Every discussion or banter in life is a negotiation. As business animals, who negotiate, interact, transact, lead, and follow, we must continue to build friendships and relationships. Again, there cannot be a business transaction without someone seeking to lead.”
Explaining the theory of leadership such as Transformational, Servant Leadership, Autocratic, Democratic among others.,Okposo said: “The Great Man Theory,” which emphasises that great leaders were born with essential personality traits. He said, “Understanding our background can direct how quickly we become leaders in our different lives and endeavours. History provides lessons for leadership and decision-making.”
In addition, he stressed the importance of historical case studies in guiding present and future leaders, guiding them to work aroundcomplex challenges or situations and make informed decisions.
He said: “From informing decision-making to fostering identity, critical thinking, empathy, and leadership skills, history serves as the cornerstone for personal growth and societal progress.”“History iskey to effective governance, diplomacy and conflict resolution”.He advanced history to be embedded with intuitive knowledge and understanding of our genealogy; and as a compass or life navigational instrument.
In appreciation,as Chairman of the occasion, Crawford University, Vice Chancellor, ProfessorReubenJiyaKolo described Okposo as a versatile lecturer and recapped the importance of history. He was also commended for originality by the Academics in attendance.
He underscored: “We all know that history is very important. The return to history in our schools shows its importance. And it is a fact, that if we know where we are coming from, we will know where we are going.”
The public lecture was attended by reverend fathers, royal fathers, and academics representatives from Covenant University, lecturers, students, friends, families, and well-wishers among other dignitaries.
