Customs lauds women’s contributions to revenue generation in maritime

The Area Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tin Can Island Area Command, Dera Nnadi, has lauded the contribution of women to revenue generation in the maritime industry. Nnadi stated this during the International Women’s Day commemoration by the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA), Tincan Island chapter, Lagos.


The programme, with the theme: ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress’, had in attendance women representatives of other government agencies, media, importers, customs agents and freight forwarders.

Nnadi said the revenue target for the command for February 2024 was N94 billion, but for the resilience, tenacity, doggedness and determination of the female officers, it recorded N100 billion.

He said women are doing their best in moving the customs command forward and the nation’s economy at large.

“We appreciate the contributions of our female officers heading different terminals at TinCan Command. Women are the strongest advocates of economic growth not only in Nigeria but all over the world. We also recognise the role of women in the maritime industry, because this industry cannot survive without the hard work and support of women,” he stated.


Also speaking, the Chairperson, COWA, Tincan Island chapter, Chinelo Dera-Nnadi, said despite facing adversity, women in customs exhibit remarkable resilience and determination.
She said many have overcome obstacles to excel in traditionally male-dominated environments, adding that their perseverance and dedication serve as inspiring examples of resilience and strength.

The COWA chairperson said women’s contributions extend beyond Customs as it encompasses diverse fields such as leadership roles in business, politics, education, healthcare, innovation and advancements that drive progress and societal change.

The resource person, Deputy Comptroller General of Customs (rtd) Kaycee Ekekezie, said women have made remarkable achievements and contributions in the maritime sector around the world.
