Davido paid tribute to the legendary Beninese singer-songwriter Angelique Kidjo, referring to her affectionately as ‘Mama Africa’ during an interview with CNN’s Inside Africa.

Davido sat down with CNN to discuss his journey, influences, and the African music landscape. Among the topics was his profound respect for Kidjo, whom he credits with paving the way for African artists on the international stage.

“I’ve always been wanting to work with Mama Africa, that’s what we call her, for a long long time,” Davido shared. “She can perform anywhere and for different crowds. And she has represented us so well, you know, on the global scene. She opened doors for new artists like myself.”

The ‘Fem’ hitmaker went on to discuss his recent collaboration with Kidjo, expressing his delight at finally being able to work with someone he considers a trailblazer in the industry. The collaboration, which also features The Cavemen, is part of his Grammy-nominated album ‘Timeless.’

Kidjo, a four-time Grammy Award winner, has been a vocal advocate for African culture and music, seamlessly blending various musical styles while maintaining a deep connection to her roots.

Responding to Davido’s comments, Angelique Kidjo took to Twitter to express her gratitude: “Thank you @davido for your kind words on @cnn Inside Africa! ”

Her acknowledgment of Davido’s remarks shows the mutual respect they have for each other.
