Residents of communities on Bonny Island, Rivers State, are reportedly alarmed over an incident of dead fishes seen floating along the shoreline in the area.

The Guardian learnt that the incident happened on Wednesday, February 21, at a creek between the Alpha Jetty of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) and Shell Nigeria’s Bonny Oil and Gas Terminal (BOGT), in Bonny Council.

Some chemical substances suspected to be crude oil or effluents from nearby pipes were seen on top of the water. Community sources said samples of the water have been taken for forensic examination.

Recall that a similar incident happened in 2020 when tons of dead fish were found floating on the water.

A source said: “This appears to be a repeat of the 2020 incident when hordes of a particular fish, the Croaker, were seen either dead or fighting for life along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

“There is no explanation yet on why this is happening but enquiries have been sent to both NLNG and Shell. Some organisations in Bonny Local Council have obtained samples of water around the area where the dead fish were found for forensic examination.”
