Delta Assembly sets goals for standards in education sector

Delta Assembly

Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Education has commenced visits to establishments under its legislative oversight to ascertain their level of commitment to quality service delivery.

Chairman of the committee, Charles Emetulu, said all hands must be on deck to achieve set goals for the sector.

The lawmakers were at the Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, College of Education Mosogar, and College of Education, Warri.

Emetulu, who represents Ndokwa West in the House, lauded the removal of some bureaucratic bottlenecks to enable higher institutions to run independently for massive infrastructural development.

He urged the authorities to be innovative and create alternative means of funding instead of depending solely on the government.

Emetulu said he was impressed with the institutions, particularly in the area of project execution through internally generated revenue and the Tertiary Education Fund’s (TETfund) intervention.

Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof Johnbull Tonukeri, commended the Legislators for the oversight visit and support.

He noted that the ministry has made provisions for the accreditation of courses in various institutions, while also addressing the issue of staff shortage.

Rector of Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, Prof. Emmanuel Ufuophu-Biri, appealed to the committee to assist in the completion of abandoned projects and release of funds for accreditation of programmes.

The Provost, College of Education, Mosogar, Dr Israel Emide, and his Warri counterpart, Dr Dickson Oyovwe, appealed for the domestication of the dual mode programme as applicable at the federal level, to enable them to award both NCE certificates and degrees.
