Delta governor, monarchs worried over security situation in communities – Police

Muyiwa Adejobi

Nigeria Police Force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has said Delta State governor Sheriff Oborevwori and monarchs are worried over the security situations in the state.

There have been recent cases of attacks on security personnel in Delta State. In March, 2024, six police officers were ambushed and killed in Delta State.

The Guardian reported that the officers were killed by assailants, while on a mission to investigate the disappearance and rescue of three of their colleagues in the Ohoro Forest, in the state.

Also, in Delta State on Thursday, March 14, 17 soldiers who were on a mission to halt clashes between two communities in Okuama, were killed.

“We have recorded like four incidents in Delta State in particular,” Adejobi said on Politics Today on Channels Television.

“Everybody including the governor of Delta State is worried, the traditional rulers are worried.”

Adejobi gave reasons why the Niger Delta region is now a dreadful place for security agencies.

“There are reasons for this, first, the population, the growing economy in that place, the oil business they have in that place and so many other things.

“But I think from the security circle in Nigeria we have been carrying out certain analysis. A meeting is going on with senior officers, service commanders even with the NSA to address some of these issues.”

He explained that aside the Niger Delta areas, there have been pockets of incidents in all the geo-political zones in the country.

The police spokesperson said it is their responsibility to actually tackle these challenges to have a peaceful society in Nigeria.

He commended individuals in Delta State who have been working with security personnels to help arrest armed assailants causing problems.

“I want to believe they are not hibernating in any corner in Delta State, it has not been so easy for them and we would pick every one of them without picking innocent people that era where innocent people are picked is gone,” Adejobi said.
