To solve the problem of shortage of potable water supply in Delta State, the state government has called on private operators to partner with the state to manage its various water schemes and make water available in all homes.

Delta State Commissioner for Water Resources, Samuel Mariere, made this known while speaking with journalists in Asaba.

The commissioner revealed that the state government is desirous to see that the water schemes are properly managed for optimal performance, adding that interested operators should come forward for negotiations.

He assured Deltans of the readiness of the ministry to ensure potable water runs in every home, saying that the State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, is committed to the various water projects.

Mariere noted that to make the project viable and sustainable, Deltans must pay water rate. According to him, the payment is not about profit to the government, but to raise money to fund the system and also to make water supply regular.

He revealed that the Asaba Capital Territory Water Schemes made up of Asaba Water Scheme, Okpanam Water Scheme and Ibuzor Water Scheme, when completed would be managed by the contractors for one year before they are paid, saying this is to enable the engineers from World Bank to confirm there is water in all homes before payment is made.

The Commissioner, who disclosed that the World Bank fund is not a grant, but a loan secured by the Federal government on behalf of the states, said communities including Ewvreni, Osubi, Oleh, Eruwa, Akugbene, Otowhodo, Iyede-Ame among others are beneficiaries.

According to Mariere, more than 110 water schemes made up of new ones and rehabilitated schemes are currently functioning in various parts of the state.
