Delta overtakes Edo in human trafficking, says NAPTIP

The Zonal Commander, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Nduka Nwawenne, yesterday, declared that Delta State has overtaken Edo State in human trafficking in Nigeria.

Nwawenne disclosed this in Asaba, Delta State, when the team met Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ekemejero Ohwovoriole. He pointed out that Ika South had the highest cases of human trafficking in the state, obviously because of its proximity with Edo.

Nwawenne also appealed to the state government and other stakeholders to provide office accommodation for NAPTIP in Asaba. Reacting, Ohwovoriole, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, decried the increasing rate of human trafficking in the state.

He said it was disheartening that Delta State now ranks first in human trafficking, overtaking Edo. He stressed the need for stakeholders to tackle the menace, noting that young girls and children from poor family backgrounds are often the most vulnerable.

The Attorney-General said the request for an office space in the state would be looked into, even as he assured of his ministry’s partnership in the fight against human trafficking.
