Suspected cultists kill one, as woman nabbed for pouring hot water on daughter
The Delta State police command has returned N150, 000 allegedly obtained by force from a young man on Sapele road, by a police patrol team at a checkpoint.
The money was returned after the state’s police commissioner, Ari Mohammed Ali, intervened following pressures mounted by some activists led by Israel Joe.
The victim identified as Godspower, said the policemen stopped him on Sapele road and took him to a Point of Sale (POS) centre, where they withdrew N150, 000 from his bank account.
The police command handed the recovered money to the activist, Israel Joe who was seen in viral video returning the money to the victim.
According to the activist, the state command confirmed that the policemen involved in the incident have been arrested and detained at the command headquarters in Asaba.
In a statement on his Facebook page, Joe said: “The news went viral on the internet how some policemen in Delta State along Sapele extorted N150, 000 from a Nigerian citizen. This is to inform the public that we have recovered the money and have called the victim to come and get it. For avoidance of fear and intimidation, the victim may not want to interface with the police.
The Delta State Commissioner of Police and all senior officers, the Delta State Government Human Rights Protection Committee and Deltans have zero tolerance for extortion.
We shall continue to work towards strengthening the protection of human rights and rule of law within the tenets of our duties. I want to thank you all especially, Harrison Gwamnishu, my colleague in the committee whom we worked in collaboration to recover the said money.”
MEANWHILE, the Iyara-Essi Layout in Warri South council of Delta State was at the weekend thrown into mourning as suspected armed rival cultists killed an unidentified man.
Sources said the cultists engaged in a supremacy battle on Friday night, with dangerous weapons, putting residents in panic.
A rival cult group was reported to have killed the deceased on Friday night, but the body was found on Saturday morning in a dirty pathway, with machete cuts on his forehead.
The source added that there have been similar clashes between Vikings and Eiye confraternity in the same area last December, leading to the death of one person.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, who confirmed the incident said: “ I think it is a cult clash”.
THE police have also arrested a woman who poured boiled water on the breast of her daughter, Nwankwo Merit, in Ekpan, Delta State.
The suspect, now in police custody, was arrested at the weekend.
Delta state chapter of the Center for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), led by the secretary, Israel Joe said some senior police officers played vital role leading to the arrest of the woman.
According to him, the incident happened on January 7, 2022 and we had to wait until the girl was discharged from hospital before taking action.
He said: “I had called the Divisional Police Officer, intimating him of the incident and he promised to join us in seeking justice for the young girl. I drew the attention of my senior, Pastor Egedegbe Edewor to the matter and he reported it to commissioner for Women Affairs, Delta State, who detailed the welfare officer in Warri to accompany us for the arrest.
We led a team of Police from Ekpan division to arrest the suspect and she is cooling off right now at Ekpan Police station.
When contacted, the state police spokesman DSP Bright Edafe confirmed the arrest.
