Disciple your discipline – Part 1

The Rector, Venerable Stephen Wolemonwu

The ability to disciple self-esteem, self-respect and self-worth brings about victory over our human dreaded fear. Victory begins with self-victory for Plato who said: “The first and best victory is to conquer self.”

The strongest reason for failure is the master called “excuse.” Man in his uniqueness has developed thousand and one excuses for every failure, disappointment, error, mistake or sin. Sometimes, it is called “weakness,” the essence of my excuse for failure. An excuse is something to give as a reason for not achieving a desired goal. A student who failed his/her exam when asked, in most cases, blames the examiner for not giving them a conducive examining environment, setting questions outside the syllabus and sometimes blames his/her fellow students for the failure.

Giving excuses for personal failure brings about the sin of “self-justification.” Across the world people are saying, if not for this reason, I would have been very rich, educated, married and established. I would have been better, stronger, great and influential. I would have been the governor, president, a priest highly anointed; a medical doctor, etc. Could you write out the reasons for your failure and for being where you are now?

Reading through Genesis 3:8-19, we discover.
• Excuse given by Adam and Eve
• General punishment for the three parties involved in the rebellion and disobedience of God’s instructions.

This reveals that no one is truly excused to be a failure. No man truly has an excuse to have failed in life. “Therefore, you are inexcusable, O man, whosoever you are that Judge,” Romans 2:1a

Another reason for our excuses is that, “it is unimportant, and nothing is ever important or it’s very important and attempting it could result to a great mistake.”

On daily basis, God grants us the opportunity to enrich our understanding, stir and spur our hearts, just to make us actualise our goals. So; stop making excuses, start making excelling heights. In the same place that you mourned your failure, giving several excuses, others that have the same size of brain, and similar background have celebrated great successes.

Come to think of it, in the words of my Primary Five teacher, Aunty Gladys, a challenging and thought provoking statement goes: “If other birds can fly, why can’t I?” Reflecting on this as a child of God, can you ask yourself if others can be rich as true Christians why can’t I? If others can excel in life; if others can enjoy peace in marriage. If others can be good couples; if others can have a heaven on earth relationship; if others can live in victory over Satan and sin why can’t you? Ask yourself!
