Disney Animation And Kugali’s “Iwájú” Set To Premiere

Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pan-African entertainment company Kugali proudly announce the upcoming release of the original six-part animated series, “Iwájú,” exclusively streaming on Disney+ starting February 28, 2024. A sneak peek with captivating images is now available for viewers.


While the series debuts on February 28 in the US, release details for other regions, including Nigeria, will be revealed shortly.

“Iwájú” unfolds in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria, offering a gripping coming-of-age tale that follows Tola, a young girl from the affluent island, and her best friend, Kole, a self-taught tech expert. Together, they unravel the secrets and dangers concealed in their distinct worlds.

With director Olufikayo Ziki Adeola, production designer Hamid Ibrahim, and cultural consultant Toluwalakin Olowofoyeku at the helm, Kugali filmmakers transport audiences into the vibrant world of “Iwájú,” teeming with unique visual elements and technological advancements inspired by the spirit of Lagos. The series, produced by Disney Animation’s Christina Chen with a screenplay by Adeola and Halima Hudson, boasts a stellar voice cast including Simisola Gbadamosi, Dayo Okeniyi, Femi Branch, Siji Soetan, and Weruche Opia.

Adeola expressed, “Crafting the narrative of ‘Iwájú’ has been a journey of creative alchemy, blending the rich cultural tapestry of Lagos with imaginative leaps into the future. Debuting alongside the series on February 28 is “Iwájú: A Day Ahead,” a documentary special filmed across three continents. This documentary shares the inspiring story of Kugali’s founders, who turned their dreams into reality by creating an original animation series with Walt Disney Animation Studios. Directed by Megan Harding and executive produced by Amy Astley and Beth Hoppe, the documentary showcases that anything is possible when talent meets opportunity.
