Don’t panic, viral ‘terrorist video’, recorded six years ago, police tell Nigerians

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has clarified a trending video depicting a group of persons suspected to be armed terrorists carrying assault rifles with a commentary in Hausa language, warning against disinformation.


Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement addressed the video that has recently gained significant attention and caused widespread concern, saying it was recorded six years ago.

“After thorough and detailed video graphic analysis conducted by the NPF Cybercrime Centre, it has been confirmed that the video in question was originally created and circulated on 28th May, 2018,” Adejobi explained on X.

“Our findings reveal that the video was recently reposted with a misleading narrative with the deliberate intention to cause unnecessary panic and disruption within the country.”


While urging the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information, the police issued a strong warning to individuals who engage in the deliberate spread of false information.

Adejobi stated that misinformation is an act which is irresponsible, criminal and punishable under the law.

He also reiterated that such acts can cause significant harm, incite panic and destabilise the country.


The police further assured that anyone found to be involved in the creation or dissemination of misleading content will face the full extent of the law.

“We encourage everyone to rely on official channels for accurate updates and to report any suspicious activities or content to the authorities,” the police spokesman added.


Meanwhile, the police had a few months ago strongly moved against cyberbullying and fake news.

Adejobi who made the disclosure said the NPF condemn in the strongest terms the dissemination of false information.
