Doyin Okupe on Monday announced his resignation from the Labour Party (LP), citing ideological differences.
Okupe announcing his resignation said those ideological differences emerged after the 2023 elections.
The former head of LP’s presidential campaign, in a letter explained that his lifelong alignment with right-wing and liberal democratic principles clashed with the party’s left-of-center ideology which made continued membership untenable.
“I submit herewith my letter of resignation from the Labour Party with effect from today,” he wrote.
“You will recall that our flagbearer, Mr. Peter Obi, myself and others left the PDP abruptly and had to look for a Special Purpose Vehicle in which to contest the 2023 presidential elections.”
Okupe said they contested the election on the platform of the Labour Party and lost.
He stated that this makes it difficult for him to continue to stay in the Labour Party which is ideologically rooted in the left of the center.
Okupe added that he has been a rightist and a ‘Liberal Democrat’ his entire life.
According to him, it is therefore this ideological conflict that makes him seek an exit so that he may continue his political activities with liberalism, sincerity and freedom.
