Driver rams into UNICAL Students injured four on campus

A Driver driving recklessly in a black Lexus RX 300 Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) ran over four students of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) inside the campus.


It was also gathered that the driver hits an electric pool in the process, putting the University in total darkness.

According to eyewitnesses, the sad incident happened on Wednesday (May 17) bedside the university’s Senate Chambers.

Eyaks Udoka.eho witnessed the accident disclosed that the driver was on a high speed when he hits and knocked the students down.

“I was there when it happened. The driver was at high speed otherwise he would have controlled the car without jumping across the gutter. The victims were unconscious when they took them to the hospital, Udoka said.

Another witness, Nsikak Ibatt , said that the driver lost control, rammed into the students and crashed, wrecking the electric pole.

“There will be a temporary shortage of power supply on Campus due to this – a high-tension cable was affected as a result of the accident.


The students involved were rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) shortly after the accident.

“Three out of the four students were discharged when I visited the hospital – and they are all fine”. Ibatt revealed.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of UNICAL, Prof. Florence Obi who later visited the victims of the accident at the Teaching Hospital on Thursday (May 18), offered financial assistance for their medication.

The Vice-Chancellor while wishing the victims quick recovery, urged staff, students and visitors of the University to be careful, and adhere strictly to speed limits and regulations while driving on campus.

She was accompanied by the University’s Bursar, Mr Joseph Odum; the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Tony Enyang; Mr Dominic Okpene; the Students’ Union Government, SUG President, Comr. Tyron Bassey; and several others.
