Drug abuse: IGP commends Lagos officers for rejecting N4m bribe

IGP Kayode Egbetokun

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has commended the officer in charge of the police tactical team attached to Area K, Marogbo, Lagos State Command, SP Rilwan Kasumu, for rejecting a N4 million bribe while investigating a case of drug peddling and unlawful possession of ammunition.

The team had arrested Esther Newman Obiekezie, 42, a.k.a Candy, of No 6, Mojirade Street, Ilogbo, Lagos, on February 6, at her base where she sold a drug called Ice. They recovered a large quantity of the substance, alongside some live AK-47 ammunition.

Police spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in the cause of investigation, the duo of Esther Akete, 43, and Oke Okebalam, 49, of Ajangbadi Lagos, came to the station in Ijanikin to solicit release of the alleged drug peddler. They also offered N4 million and pleaded that the police, henceforth, stop disrupting Obiekezie’s illegal business.

“The police officer frowned at the offer, seized the cash, marked it as exhibit, and arrested the duo for further investigation and prosecution.

“The IGP reiterates the commitment of the Force to harness all available means and adopt professional strategies to tackle all forms of crimes and criminality in Nigeria,” he added.
