The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), Lagos chapter, has officially called off the proposed protest against the impasse over the data-sharing agreement between the Lagos State Government and Uber Technologies System Nigeria Limited.
Contrary to initial reports, the Union’s discontent lies not with the Lagos government but squarely with Uber for its failure to adhere to the government’s directive on the integration of the Application Programme Interface (API), which is crucial for real-time data sharing.
The Union Chairman, Jaiyesimi Azeez, has expressed support for the API integration, recognising its significant role in bolstering the safety of drivers.
This stance comes considering the alarming incidents involving their members, where drivers have been subjected to attacks by p0assengers. In a statement by Lagos PRO, Iwindoye Steven, the union emphasized the necessity of the API integration, as it would provide a robust mechanism to promptly address and mitigate harrowing incidents, thereby ensuring the well-being and safety of their members.
Amidst the developments, the Union has extended its gratitude towards the Lagos State Government (LASG) Ministry of Transport for its proactive efforts in releasing the vehicles that were impounded.
This gesture by the ministry has been perceived as a positive step towards resolving the ongoing issues and fostering a collaborative environment between the e-hailing drivers and the regulatory authorities. Furthermore, the Union members have clarified their position, stating that their grievances are not aimed at the Lagos State Government.
