Ebonyi State Government, yesterday, condemned a letter by a group known as ‘Edda Identity’ to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; and the National Human Rights Commission to probe killings in Edda Community, in Afikpo South Council, and bring perpetrators to justice, accusing Governor David Umahi of playing politics with lives of the people. It, therefore, described the letter as substance-less and ill-willed.

The group, had in an open letter, signed by one Ama Orji, urged the IGP, Speaker of the House of Representatives and the National Human Rights Commission to probe killings in the area and bring perpetrators to justice.

The group also asked the state government to implement resolutions on the killings and disturbances in the area.

Oji said the committee submitted its report to the state government, which promised to act on its recommendations, but has done nothing till date, only for it to set up a commission of inquiry over recent killings on December 26, 2022, and January 1, 2023, in Ekoli and Amoso Edda, respectively.

But in a swift reaction, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Information, Uchenna Orji, described the letter as substance-less and ill-willed, adding that it was targeted at undermining efforts of government at bringing peace in the area.
In another development, Chief Press Secretary to the Abia State Governor, Onyebuchi Ememanka, in a statement, yesterday, said that the Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, decries mass arrests of citizens around Ndiegoro area of Aba by officers of the Nigeria Police over alleged killing of policemen in the area.

He also said the governor condemned any act of hostility against any security agent anywhere in the state.

According to Ememanka, Ikpeazu assured citizens in the area that his administration is already in talks with service commanders of different security agencies in the state geared toward bringing the situation under control, and ensure that peace and tranquility returns to the area.
