Edo LP chairmen call for Abure’s removal over guber poll

Julius Abure

The State Chairmen Forum of the Labour Party (LP) have called on the National Chairman of the Party, Julius Abure, to vacate his seat as ruled by the court to avoid jeopardising the victory of the party’s candidate in the forthcoming governorship election.

The stakeholders noted that Abure’s continuous stay in office might affect the party’s candidate if dragged before the court. Speaking in Bauchi, yesterday, the Chairman of the Forum and the Plateau State Chairman, Solomon Ndam, charged the party’s Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Baba Ahmed Datti, to prevail on him to quit.

He said: “We want to draw your attention to a critical matter that could impact the upcoming off-season election in Edo State. We want to remind the party and the people of the state about the potential repercussions if we emerge victorious and these legal complexities surrounding the leadership of the party if not addressed.

“A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), led by Justice Hamza Muazu, on April 5, 2023, restrained Abure from parading himself as the National Chairman of the LP. It is imperative for the party and the people of Edo State to consider this matter seriously, as the actions of one individual should not jeopardise the efforts of our candidate and the aspirations of our voters in the state.

Also, Ndam appreciated Obi’s responsiveness and swift action, as he has called for the external auditing of the party’s accounts. The gesture, according to him, underscored his unwavering commitment to transparency and the principles of the New Nigeria project.

“However, we find ourselves at a critical juncture where we must address certain internal matters for the sake of our party’s integrity. In the spirit of openness and accountability, as elected chairmen of the LP in Nigeria, we are appealing to Obi, Datti, and other distinguished personalities within the party to join us in requesting Abure to step aside.”
