NECO warns of identity theft, fake results through proxy enrollment

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has sounded the alarm on the dangers of enrolling candidates through proxy, highlighting the potential for identity theft and fraudulent results.

It underscored the need for candidates to register directly for its examinations to prevent identity theft and fake results.

This is even as the examination body has said it has put in place measures to checkmate impersonation in all its examinations.

This was disclosed by the Acting Director, Information and Public Relations of the Council, Azeez Sani, in a statement on Monday.

These measures, he said, are to eradicate all forms of examination malpractice.

He highlighted the measures to include the use of biometric data capturing devices, use of customised answer booklets and embossing of photograph and date of birth of candidates on the original certificates.

The spokesperson also announced that the results of candidates found culpable of impersonation in the just released 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) Internal, have been withheld.

“Also, the NECO e-Verify, an online platform for confirmation/verification of NECO results was unveiled last year.

“Members of the public are enjoined to note that any certificate purported to have been issued by the Council, and which cannot be verified or authenticated using the NECO e-verify platform, is fake.

“The Council therefore calls on State Ministries of Education and other school owners to ensure that only personal details of genuine candidates are used for registration in all NECO-conducted examinations,” the statement read.
