The Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of the Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), Kano, has tendered an unreserved apology to the university’s management, faculty, and staff following a disturbance that occurred at the entrance of an examination hall on 24 October 2025.
In a statement signed by the PTA Chairman, Alhaji Mustapha Balarabe, the association condemned the behaviour of Mr Bashir Hussain Adamu and his student niece, describing their conduct as “unacceptable and condemnable.”
Balarabe stated that the PTA was committed to supporting disciplinary and legal actions to safeguard the university’s academic standards and institutional integrity.
“The behaviour exhibited by Mr Bashir Hussain Adamu and his student niece was utterly condemnable and falls short of the standards we uphold as parents and as an institution,” the statement read.
The PTA commended MAAUN’s management for its commitment to professionalism and moral values, noting that the university’s steady growth under the leadership of Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, Founder and President of MAAUN, had made it a model institution across Africa.
“Over the last decade, since the establishment of MAAUN campuses in Niger and now in Nigeria, we have witnessed consistent growth, quality teaching, and moral excellence. We, as parents, have every reason to be proud of MAAUN and its leadership,” Balarabe added.
Reacting to a video clip of the incident circulating on social media, the PTA described it as “a deliberate act of manipulation and blackmail,” alleging that the individuals involved edited and shared the footage in a way that misrepresented the facts and discredited both the lecturer and the university.
The statement called the act “unethical and an assault on the dignity of educators,” urging MAAUN to pursue legal redress to deter future attempts at defamation or online harassment.
According to the PTA, the individuals involved unlawfully appeared at the examination venue without authorisation, breaching the university’s examination regulations and decorum. The ensuing confrontation, it said, disrupted the ongoing assessment and brought unnecessary public attention to the institution.
“The PTA distances itself from such indiscipline and reminds parents that they are not permitted to access examination halls or restricted areas. Any engagement must take place through the university’s administrative offices,” Balarabe emphasised.
The association also criticised the security lapse that allowed unauthorised access to the examination area and urged management to enforce accountability among the personnel involved.
Reaffirming its support for MAAUN’s leadership, the PTA pledged continued collaboration in promoting discipline, academic excellence, and mutual respect. It also appealed to faculty members to accept its apology and assured that awareness would be strengthened among parents about respecting academic boundaries.
“No individual should weaponise social media or undermine the authority of lecturers with impunity,” the statement stressed. “The MAAUN PTA remains committed to upholding a disciplined and respectful learning environment.”
