EFCC arrests banker, PoS agent over currency racketeering

Operatives of the Port Harcourt Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested a banker, identified as Soberechukwu Ewa, and a Point of Sale (PoS) cashier, Azubuike Obasi, for allegedly selling new naira notes to customers.

EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewole, in a statement, yesterday, said the suspects were arrested in the early hours of Friday, February 15, at Ecobank, Rumuobiakani and Maddox Nightclub, new Government Reserved Area, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He said preliminary investigation showed that Ewa allegedly specialises in selling new naira notes of different denominations to PoS cashiers for profit, while Obasi was caught engaging in currency racketeering by charging fees for new naira notes.

Obasi was arrested in possession of N554,600.Oyewole said the suspects would soon be charged in court.
