Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has told Northern leaders to emulate the late Premier of Northern Region, Sir Ahmadu Bello, while politicking.

Speaking at a special lecture organised by the Sardauna Memorial Foundation at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano, yesterday, Osinbajo said the Sardauna of Sokoto’s sterling leadership quality would remain indelible in the political lexicon of the country.

At the lecture entitled ‘Reviving the Northern Traditional Institutions, Imperatives on Peace and Security in the North,’ the VP stated that the Sardauna fought to jettison differences in ethnic and religious decisions during his lifetime.

According to him, the issue of good governance and leadership in a democratic setting entails commitment and doggedness of a leader who can, at all times, strive to safeguard his people at all costs.

On the persistent insecurity in the North, Osinbajo assured that the Federal Government is working round the clock to ensure that those apprehended as a result of evolvement in terrorism are speedily prosecuted in line with the laws of the country.

“Government is not unmindful of the present trauma the people of the North are undergoing, especially the issue of banditry, which is not peculiar to Nigeria,” he said.

Commending Sardauna’s love for Talakawa, humility, punctuality and contribution to mankind, he added: “The emirate system in Northern Nigeria, a well-structured institution, was the legacy of the Sardauna of Sokoto.

“The traditional institutions were enjoying the confidence of the people and were held in the highest esteem because they were responsible to the yearnings of their people.”

Speaking earlier, the Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT), Sardauna Memorial Foundation, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu, said the North is in search of direction and focus in the business of governance and leadership, considering the myriad woes afflicting the North.

On his part, Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, extolled the leadership qualities of the late premier, for standing to lead by example, devoid of primordial sentiment, affirming that if not for what he had done to the region, it would continue to be at the lower rung of the ladder.
