Energy crisis deepens as prices of LPG, kerosene spike

Nigeria’s energy crisis continues with the cost of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and kerosene increasing by 22.03 per cent and 104.07 per cent respectively in the past one year.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in its March 2023 LPG and kerosene price watch, reports that the average retail price for refilling a five kilogramme (kg) cylinder of LPG and household Kerosene increased by 22.03 per cent and 104.07 per cent over past year.

According to the report, the price of refilling 5kg of cooking gas increased by 0.22 per cent on a month-on-month basis, from N4,600.57 recorded in February 2023 to N4,610.48 in March 2023.

On a year-on-year basis, it rose by 22.03 per cent, from N3,778.3 in March 2022. For household kerosene, the NBS reports that the average retail price per gallon paid by consumers in March 2023 was N4,105.25, showing an increase of 4.56 per cent compared with N3,926.23 paid in February 2023. On a year-on-year basis, this increased by 104.07 per cent, from N2,011.7 in March 2022.

The report showed that Kwara recorded the highest average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of cooking gas with N4, 962.87, followed by Abuja with N4,940, and Adamawa with N4,915.

On the other hand, Rivers recorded the lowest price with N4, 204.45, followed by Abia and Anambra with N4,220.15 and N4,232.75 respectively. Analysis by zone showed that the North-Central recorded the highest average retail price of refilling a 5kg cylinder cooking gas with N4,872.20, followed by the North-West (N4,651.93) while the South-East recorded the lowest with N4,441.55.
