APPA harps on consumer protection to address vandalism of electricity infrastructure

Seeks payment for gas in naira

The Association for Public Policy Analysis (APPA) has said Nigeria must address the concerns of electricity consumers in the country in order to ensure the protection of rising vandalism of electricity infrastructure.

This comes as the association awarded some agencies for their efforts in protecting critical infrastructure and championing consumer rights across sectors.

National President of APPA, PrinceWill Okorie, while in Abuja said there has to be compensation for the investment communities and individuals are making in the power sector to buy transformers, wires, poles and others.

He disclosed that most communities across the country are aggrieved over the electricity situation in the country, especially the treatment they get from the distribution companies.

Okorie also noted that there is a need for billing transparency in the power sector, telecommunications and others. Okorie also noted that amid the menace of gas flaring, Nigeria has no business in pricing gas on foreign exchange.

He also decries arbitrary billing of consumers, stressing that a lot of consumers are getting hostile and overestimated, a situation that would be avoided if consumers were metered.

While awarding the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), the association noted that the efforts of the agency in protecting and educating consumers on their rights are commendable.

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSDC) was also awarded for its efforts in safeguarding schools and the nation’s critical infrastructure.
Others awarded are Usman Mahmud Maulud, Musa Muhammed Tsoken, his royal highness, Eze Matthew Chiedoziem and others.
