Enugu govt directs council chairmen to hand over to admin heads

Enugu State government, yesterday, ordered local council chairmen in the 17 councils of the state to hand over administration to heads of personnel management accordingly. It was gathered that the tenure of the chairmen ended yesterday.

The hand-over directive was issued by the Commissioner for Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Deacon Okey Ogbodo.

Ogbodo said that the directive was in line with the extant laws guiding tenureship of elected chairmen and councillors in the local councils.

He said: “The tenure of the chairmen and councillors of the 17 councils in Enugu State formally came to an end yesterday, on March 4, 2024.

“Consequently, all the council chairmen are expected to hand over to the heads of personnel management in each council with effect from yesterday.

“This is in line with the extant laws guiding tenureship of elected chairmen and councillors in our local councils.”

It is not clear whether the state would conduct council elections soon or opt for transition committee chairmen.
