Honourable Esosa Iyawe, representing Oredo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has launched a Food Bank initiative to provide food relief to his constituents in response to the rising inflation and impending famine in Nigeria. The initiative, known as the “Hon Engr Esosa Iyawe Food Bank,” will distribute free food items on a monthly basis to help families in Edo State cope with the current economic challenges.

Nigeria is experiencing its highest inflation rate in decades, with food prices reaching unprecedented levels, leaving many families struggling to afford basic staples. To address this crisis, Esosa Iyawe has created a food palliative programme designed to ease the burden on his constituents.

Registration to benefit from the initiative is free and will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays for the general public. The elderly and physically challenged members of the constituency can register every Wednesday, between 12 pm and 4 pm, at the Honourable Esosa Iyawe Constituency Office at No. 33, Stadium Road (Fmr. VicBiz Building), Benin City, Edo State.

In his statement, Esosa Iyawe emphasized the urgency of addressing food insecurity and the looming famine across the country. “While I continue to move motions and bills to improve the economy of Nigeria and Oredo Federal Constituency, I have decided to embark on this FOOD BANK initiative to cushion the effects of the looming food crisis in my Constituency,” he said.

Esosa Iyawe has introduced several initiatives since taking office to support his constituents. During the 2023 yuletide season, he distributed food items across the constituency to celebrate Christmas and New Year. Additionally, in December 2023, he organized the maiden edition of the Esosa Iyawe football tournament, providing young football talents in the constituency with a platform to be scouted and advance their careers.

As a member of the Labour Party, Esosa Iyawe has also moved motions on the floor of the House of Representatives, focusing on fostering economic growth and development. These include the ‘Need for Valuation of Public Assets in Nigeria and Ensure Accountability in the Management of Government Assets’ and a motion to require all uniformed government organisations to source their fabric from the National Union of Textile, Garment, and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN).

The Hon Engr Esosa Iyawe Food Bank is set to become a significant source of support for families in Oredo Federal Constituency as they navigate the challenges of rising food prices and economic hardship.
