Expert says advocacy will stop irregular migration

Illegal migrants on their way to Europe

Towards addressing the problem of irregular migration, a handbook and movie teaser, titled ‘A Midnight Migrant’ and two other books, written by M. S Dogara., were, yesterday, presented to the public.

‘A Midnight Migrant’ seeks to combat irregular migration, human and drug trafficking to Europe through creative advocacy.

Speaking at the presentation, a migration expert, Dr Grace Perpetual Dafiel, quoting Dr Linda Adhiambo, said: “The consequences of migration are usually not predetermined, due to various stages of uncertainties that may arise, to deter the motive of the migrant to relocate.”

She said the problem of irregular migration, which is on the rise, can be addressed through creative advocacy as canvassed by the author in the book.

Reviewing the book, former President, Association of Nigeria Authors (ANA), Mr Denja Abdullahi, said the book threw more light on “Japa” syndrome across Nigeria.

Abdullahi recalled that the first migration experienced in Nigeria happened in the 1980s when the country experienced brain drain due to heavy migration of the country’s intellectuals leaving Nigeria as a result of harsh leadership by the military.
