Expert urges inclusive education for students with special needs

An expert in the field of special education has canvassed inclusive education for students with disabilities. Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, David Adejo, who spoke at the 17th convocation of the Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo, advocated equal access and inclusive learning environment to high quality education within the general education system that fosters diversity, provides tailored support and offers life-long learning opportunities. He said: “In a population of over 6,000 students, you have more than 600 with special needs being trained as teachers that deserve special attention.”

“I call on the state government under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde, as well as other government and non-governmental agencies, to support college in providing better opportunities and socio-economic relevance to children with disabilities.”

He urged government at all levels to actively promote policies that would embrace inclusive education and also ensure that necessary support systems are put in place. The permanent secretary, noted that the current administration is poised to revamp Nigeria’s education system at all levels.
