Experts move to standardise data protection industry

Poised to streamline and standardise the Nigerian privacy and data protection industry, the duo of Uche Val Obi and Olumide Babalola are set to provide skilled training on privacy and data protection in Nigeria.

Fielding bespoke courses designed to educate participants on varying areas of data protection and privacy in Nigeria, the first associateship certification course will hold in Lagos, both onsite and online on the July 5 and 6, this year.

Offering localised modules on concepts and terminologies; legal history of privacy and data protection; the legal regime; data subjects’ rights; principles of data protection; the lawful basis for processing personal data and enforcement mechanisms, the Academy’s Chairperson, Obi, said the best experts in the field would be on ground to take the specialised courses, which are based on local laws and experiences.

“A lot of works in terms of awareness, advocacy and skills-deepening is needed to give this field the necessary exposure.

Being a specialised field, entrants in this space need to be trained, hence the need for this academy,” Obi said.

The Academy’s Director, Olumide Babalola, said members of the business community, data enthusiasts, players in the digital space, academics, lawyers, judges, among others, could take the course.

Adding that the training would be the maiden edition, he stated that it is aimed at building a community of privacy professionals, developing a special curriculum on data protection locally, closing the existing gap and boosting professionalism.

He noted that upon successful completion, participants will be presented with certificates of attendance and confirmed as associates of the Academy after successful assessment.
