Delta Sports Commission has said that facilities needed to host the 8th National Youth Games (NYG) are ready. The 2024 edition of the Games is scheduled to take place from September 10 to 20, at the Steven Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

At the end of the 7th edition, which Delta State hosted last year, the state government entered an agreement with the Federal Ministry of Sports to host the next four editions of the Games, from 2023 to 2026.

Officials of the Sports Ministry were in Asaba two weeks ago to hold talks with their counterparts in Sports Commission on readiness of the facilities for the Games.

The Director General of the Delta State Sports Commission, Festus Ohwojero, told The Guardian, yesterday, that all the facilities are ready for the cadet sporting fiesta.

Ohwojero, who was part of the National Council of Sports Meeting held in Enugu, recently, assured that some of the issues encountered during the previous Youth Games in Asaba have been effectively addressed.

According to him, issues like accommodation challenges encountered last year are being meticulously resolved saying: “The Sports Commission is collaborating closely with the involved schools to guarantee sufficient lodging for the athletes. This year’s National Youth Games will host six thousand athletes and officials, encompassing all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT.”

Ohwojero praised the efforts of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his steadfast support and dedication to sports development just as he revealed that the Governor’s unwavering commitment, consistent funding, and substantial backing of the commission is a thing of joy to state’s sportsmen and women.

The Guardian recalls that the National Youth Games began in Abuja in 2013, while Kwara State hosted it five time, with Team Delta emerging champions in all editions.
