Farmers in Ondo cry out over attacks by suspected nomads

Tension heightened, yesterday, in two communities within the Ala Forest Reserve axis of Akure North Local Council, Ondo State, following attack on some farmers by those suspected to be herders.

According to residents of Powerline and Ago-Oyinbo communities, no fewer than eight farmers were injured in the attack that had been recurring for the past six months.

The farmers, while appealing to the state government and security agencies to come to their aid, said the herders had continued to wreak havoc on the community unchallenged.

One of the aggrieved farmers, Samuel Olowolafe, disclosed that life and property worth millions of naira were lost to the brutal attack. Olowolafe said: “What really happened to us at the weekend was that these Fulani herdsmen wanted to take over our farmland. They came with their guns and other dangerous weapons to attack us at midnight and carted away our property, including phones and foodstuff, among others.

“They do perpetrate the devil act at midnight. We are calling on the state government and the security agencies again to please come to our aid. Our lives are in danger, and the government should please provide adequate security for us.”at Powerline and Ago-Oyinbo at Ala Forest Reserve.”

“They (herdsmen) came at the weekend again and attacked us, shooting in the air sporadically. They always carry out the attacks at night, and in the early morning, cart away our foods, destroying our farm products, and even machete people to the extent that they would land in the hospital.

“The marauders are already planning to take over the community by chasing residents away from their homes.”
