The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has pledged to work with Governor Siminalayi Fubara when he returns to office on September 18, following the expiration of the six-month state of emergency in the state.
APC state chairman, Tony Okocha, made the pledge in Port Harcourt on Tuesday while thanking residents, the party’s national leadership, and President Bola Tinubu for their support during the just-concluded local government elections, in which APC secured 20 chairmanship seats.
“It is real that September 18 will mark exactly six months since the suspension of the governor,” Okocha said. “As the six months elapse, he is expected to return to office. So, we will work with him. The State Assembly will cooperate with the governor, but if he deviates or delves into obnoxious acts, we will criticize and call him to order.”
Okocha explained that APC deliberately avoided fielding candidates in Obio-Akpor, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, and Port Harcourt City councils, acknowledging the strong influence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in those areas. The three councils were won by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He added that the APC is working to make Rivers “100 percent APC” and urged opposition politicians, including Wike, to join the party for “absolute peace.”
