The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has cautioned students, staff, and external collaborators against filming or producing video content on its premises without official approval.
In a statement issued by the Head of the Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, the university management expressed concern over the rising trend of using its facilities, including hostels and academic buildings, for films, skits, vox pops, and other cinematographic activities conducted without authorization.
The institution said it has established clear procedures governing the use of its spaces for any form of recording or content creation.
These procedures, it noted, are aimed at maintaining safety, decorum, and the integrity of its academic and residential environments, while also protecting the university’s public image.
“Accordingly, all individuals or groups, students, staff, or external collaborators, intending to shoot any content on campus are required to obtain prior approval from the University. Requests for approval should be sent to the Communication Unit, 7th Floor, Senate House, UNILAG, Akoka,” the statement said.
While reiterating its support for creativity and responsible expression, the institution stressed that such activities must align with its operational and ethical standards.
UNILAG also announced increased monitoring of external engagements on its premises, following a surge in online content creation by students and social media influencers that sometimes portrayed the institution and its community inappropriately.
“The University encourages creativity and responsible expression; however, such activities must align with established institutional guidelines,” Alaga-Ibraheem said.
“Members of the University community and the general public are therefore advised to comply strictly with this directive in the interest of order, safety, and collective responsibility.”
