Experts in the transportation sector have emphasised the crucial role innovation and sustainability play in driving the industry.
The experts canvassed this position at a transport summit convened by the 2025 Transportation Correspondents Association of Nigeria (TCAN) held in Lagos.
The summit with the theme: ‘Driving the transport logistics value chains for economic growth,’ had participation from all transportation modes – rail, road, marine and aviation industries.
Speaking at the summit, Programme Director of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), Michael Oluwagbemi, said that to unlock economic growth, Nigeria must ensure its transport system is not only effective, but also sustainable, affordable, and future-ready.
Oluwagbemi, who was represented at the occasion by Mrs Ugonna Onyemelukwe, emphasised that through an efficient transportation system and logistics industries, agricultural produce reaches markets, while the people also stay connected.
“This is where the Presidential CNG Initiative comes in, to accelerate Nigeria’s transition from petrol and diesel to CNG, and provide Nigerians — especially those in the transport and logistics value chains with cheaper, cleaner, and safer energy alternatives,” he said.
He pointed out that CNG was important for the transport sector because it saves cost, reduces the environmental footprint of logistics operations, and harnesses Nigeria’s energy security.
He noted that Pi-CNG had begun rolling out conversion centres, training programmes, and fueling infrastructure nationwide.
He further called for collaboration among stakeholders to enhance growth in the system, adding that together, Nigeria’s transport sector would be reshaped into a model of efficiency, resilience, and sustainability.
Also, Managing Director, Lagos Computerised Vehicle Inspection Service (LACVIS), Segun Obayendo, said the summit theme underscored the need for efficiency, innovation, and sustainable practices that could transform the transport and logistics value chain into a true driver of national economic prosperity.
Obayendo, who was represented by the Executive Director, Transportation Agenda Magazine, Mrs Abike Awojobi, said that LACVIS’ mandate was to ensure safer roads through reliable and technology-driven vehicle inspections.
She explained that this aligned with the summit’s objectives of strengthening the transport ecosystem.
“We remain committed to working with industry players, regulators, and policymakers to enhance safety standards, promote professionalism, and foster growth in Nigeria’s transport and logistics sector,” Obayendo said.
