LAMATA to enlist over 2,000 buses for efficient public transport

The Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Abimbola Akinajo, said over 2,000 additional buses would soon be introduced.

Speaking during a comprehensive inspection tour of the ongoing Quality Bus Corridor projects across various parts of Lagos, Akinajo said: “One of the things we have been doing in addition to building infrastructure is procuring more buses. We are working with the private sector.”

For her, the private sector operators are more inspired because they can see that the state is investing more in efficient and seamless public transportation.

She stated: “They can see more depots, terminals and lay-bys. Some have promised us two thousand buses. We have electric buses coming, we have CNG buses coming. At the very least, by the end of this year, a minimum of 500 buses must be injected. By the end of next year, we are looking at about 2,500 buses to be injected. That is a constant conversation we are having with the private sector.”

Noting that the project is funded by the Lagos State Government and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), she added that by the third quarter of 2026, all the projects must have been completed.
Akinajo added that the initiative is also designed to enhance public transportation by constructing laybys, bus terminals and depots.

“We are trying to prevent scenarios where buses stop along the road. These corridors will not only improve the commuter experience but also ensure smoother traffic flow and safer pedestrian access. The Abule-Egba terminal has workshops where buses can be maintained. The work is going on well. There is a lot of good planning that has gone into this, and I can see the implementation of that plan. The governor plans to have adequate public transportation,’ she said.

Some of the stations visited include Iju, Abule-Egba, Ikotun, Cele, Ojuelegba and others.
