The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Anambra Command has commenced a special operation to check the proliferation of fake and unregistered number plates in the State .

CC Joyce Alexander, Sector Commander of FRSC in Anambra who disclosed this in Awka on Thursday said the operation would be a continuous one.

Alexander said non registered, improperly register and un-uploaded number plates was a threat to security in the society.

She noted with regrets that motorists removed their number plates to cover their tracks in the events of unwholesome activities but said that it is in the disadvantage of such persons in the case of security threat against them.

Alexander said it was unfortunate that most properly registered number plates were not uploaded to the FRSC database, noting that it led to loss of revenue and exposure of the individual to security risk.

She said due registration qualifies vehicles to be on the road, engenders effective data collection, aids policy making and helps government and vehicle owners to trade these vehicles in the event of any security issue.

“We found out that some vehicles are not registered, some are not uploaded on the FRSC database which is a very robust and rich data bank which every agency leverage from within and outside the country.

“The national headquarters has directed for a total clampdown on fake number plates across the country and here in Anambra, we have started the operation even though we have been enforcing it alongside other traffic offenses,” she said.

Alexander decried the non use of registration number plates among trucks and articulated vehicles while calling on every motorist to ensure that their registered numbers were properly uploaded.

She advised those wishing to obtain vehicle number plates to go through proper channels and avoid dealing with any syndicate, tout or unapproved persons.

“Most of these articulated vehicles are not registered and where they are registered, they remove their number plates and put them inside the vehicle, this is deliberate to help them get away with crimes .

“Vehicle registration process revolves around tripod of FRSC, State Board of Internal Revenue and Vehicle Inspection Office, nobody should patronise any syndicate or agent,” she said.
