The Rotary Club of Lagos Central, District 9112, has reinforced its commitment to maternal and child health with the donation of essential medical items to the Sura Primary Health Centre (PHC) on Lagos Island.
The initiative, part of Rotary International’s global service month for maternal and child health, observed every July, was delayed to early August due to a nurses’ strike. Donations included delivery couches, baby kits and foodstuffs for 40 expectant mothers, baby thermometers, fetal dopplers and Pinard fetoscopes, pulse oximeters, neonatal resuscitation kits, and maternity gowns.
Club President, Elizabeth Ajilore, represented by past president Joseph Okunubi, said the intervention reflects Rotary’s strategic service approach, which dedicates each month to a global concern. “In July, we focused on maternal and child health. In August, the emphasis is on membership. Each month is dedicated to an area of focus,” he explained.
Okunubi noted that the items were provided following a needs assessment carried out with the health facility, which the club was able to meet by about 90 per cent. He added that the club has a longstanding relationship with the Sura community, having adopted three public secondary schools and provided students with learning materials and training.
He also highlighted the club’s biannual family health programme at Sura Shopping Mall, where residents receive free consultations, screenings, and treatments over three days, fully funded by Rotary members.
The Medical Officer of Health for Lagos Island East LCDA, Dr Onose Adeleye, who represented the Executive Chairman, Hon. Muibi Folawiyo, commended the club’s consistent support. She assured that the medical equipment and supplies would be put to good use and pledged continued collaboration with Rotary.
Beneficiaries of the initiative expressed appreciation, describing the donations as both timely and impactful.
