Jobberman, one of Nigeria’s biggest online job platforms, held an orientation and counseling outreach in Makurdi. The outreach tagged “Career Clinic” was targeted at young job seekers, women and People Living With Disability (PLWD) for guidance in job search and entreprenuership.
Delivering the keynote address, themed “Your Career Compass: Gain Clarity in Work and Business”, Founder and MD Ganderia Ventures Limited, Gideon Ikyernum, spoke on the negative impact of procrastination. “Do not procrastinate. Start something. You cannot be doing nothing and achieve anything. You must be doing something to achieve something”, he said.
He encouraged the participants to identify their passions and be focussed on what they want as the sure path to success. Giving insight into the goals of Jobberman, Head of Marketing, Babajide Anjorin emphasised that many desire to go into business, but it goes beyond desire.
“Sometimes, even when the capital is there, without the basic skills, one may still not succeed.” Anjorin explained that the workshop in Benue is to ensure that talents in the state are equipped with the requisite skills and strategies to succeed and live with dignity as self employed or gainfully employed. He said Jobberman makes it a priority to train People Living With Disability and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP’s) as part of its goals of empowering the vulnerable.
The State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Theresa Ikpe lauded Jobberman for the initiative. Represented by the Director of Women Affairs, Magdalene Ador, she reiterated the willingness of the state government to partner with Jobberman.
A cross section of participants described the Career Clinic as laudable. Iorkohol Gemanen, a graduate of Psychology, who is job hunting, said he has been counselled by Jobberman that “sabiticket” is better than certificate. “I have learnt that if I add value to myself, rather than me running after people, I will instead be sought after.”
For Khadija Ibrahim, another participant, her wish is for the state government or Jobberman to provide avenues for soft loans as start up capital after their training.
Another participant, Abiodun Daniel, a HND graduate of Business Administration and Management said his biggest take-away from the event is the knowledge on the need to network.
