A Kano High Court has summoned President of ECWA Church, Kano, Rev Dr. Job Ayuba Bagat for contempt after ignoring order of the court that stopped inauguration of Central District Church Council (DCC).
Ordering Rev. Bagat (1st defendant) specifically to show cause why he should not be committed to criminal sanction, the court also nullified further action on the inauguration of the council for the other round.
Rev. Bagat, Registered Trustees of ECOWA and 10 other defendants are being charged to court by one Elder Daniel Ishaya, Elder Ali Abdu and six other plaintiffs who also senior members of the Church for flagrant disregard to court injunction.
It will be recalled that on 11th August 2025, the court, having granted the application of the 9 plaintiffs order a restraining order directing the leadership of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) from taking any further steps concerning the disputed Kano Central DCC.
The order, served by substituted means on 15th August 2025, was meant to preserve the subject matter pending hearing.
However, the Church under the leadership of Rev. Bagat and others ignored the order in a brazen defiance to legal authority and subsequently proceeded to inaugurate Rev. Dr. Emmanuel O. Malomo and five others as chairman and executive members of the Kano Central DCC on Saturday 16th August 2025.
The ugly development had prompted the plaintiffs’ returned to court with an application, drawing the judge’s attention to the blatant disregard of the order.
In a fresh order granted by Justice Maryam Sabo, in suit No. KN/868/2025, the court set aside the action taken by the church in connection with the purported inauguration, stressing that no act carried out in defiance of a valid court order can stand.
The judge further directed that Form 48, a notice of consequences of disobedience to order of the court be served on the ECWA President, a step that formally puts him on notice of contempt proceedings.
The matter was adjourned to 21st August 2025 for further hearing.
