FG recaptures more Suleja inmates, to modernise fire academy

The Federal Government, yesterday, confirmed that more of the fleeing inmates of the Suleja Medium Security custodial centre have been recaptured.

One hundred and nine of them fled the facility two weeks ago late in the night after torrential rainfall and a storm pulled down the structure and its perimeter fence.

A week later, about 19 of the prisoners were recaptured by security forces at different locations.


Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who made the disclosure shortly after visiting Kuje Correctional Centre and the Federal Fire Training Institute in Sheda, Abuja, did not give the total number of inmates recaptured so far.

He told reporters that his ministry has been undertaking different projects to ensure the safety and security of the nation’s custodial centres, while attention is also being given to other issues in the ecosystem.

He added that the current administration will soon launch a world-class fire academy comparable to mark its first year in office on May 29.

The minister said the National Fire Academy at Sheda would be expanded into a modern facility to save foreign exchange by way of cutting down on foreign training.
