The Federal Government has rolled out plans to investigate 107 private universities in Nigeria for allegedly issuing fake degrees.

The government’s investigation is prompted by a journalist, Umar Audu’s findings of fake certificates sold in the Republic of Benin and Togo.

The Nigerian government is now reportedly seeking public input to assess the facilities of the private universities, their management and staff qualifications.

According to a report, FG’s Inter-Ministerial Investigative Committee on Degree Certificate Milling will review whether private universities established in the past 15 years have the required facilities.

The Committee will also investigate whether the universities have sufficient program funding, necessary staff qualifications and types of staff employed including full-time, contract, adjunct, visiting, and other categories.

The investigation will also be conducted without prejudice to the periodic accreditation exercise of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

“Memoranda from the general public are, therefore, solicited to provide information to the committee to help it make appropriate recommendations to address the menace in line with its terms of reference,” the committee said.
