Federal government has said it will scale-up commitment to integrating gender perspective to key programmes across national and sub-national levels in line with the UN Convention on the Status of Women, (CSW).

Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, stated this at the National stakeholders debriefing session of the UN CSW 68th session in Abuja.

She said, “We expect our partners to see how their various sectors can integrate and accelerate investment and scale-up activities to work more for the attainment of gender equality and women empowerment.”

Represented by the Director Women Development in the ministry, Funke Oladipo said the session held in March at New York also recognised the need to invest and scale-up activities on women and girls to eliminate all forms of discrimination, violence and promote their rights and participation.

According to her, the Federal Government will continue to improve its efforts to promote gender equality by integrating gender perspective into all investments and programmes.

“On gender responsive programming, how responsive are they to the needs of women and girls? Those are the things we want to fine-tune and work out a plan for Nigeria to do better so that by next year we can record success,” she said.

UN Women Country Representative to Nigeria and the ECOWAS, Beatrice Eyong, called on the government to translate the global commitments arrived at during the CSW68, into action to create an equitable, inclusive, and just Nigeria.

She pointed out that the CSW68 highlighted the need for social protection systems, access to public services, and sustainable infrastructure tailored to the needs of women and girls in achieving the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
