The chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed concern over the unrest in Sudan and urged all Nigerians living in Sudan, especially students, to be calm and security vigilant.

Reports said 200 people have been killed and 1,800 wounded in a weeks-long power struggle that erupted on Saturday between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) over control of the country.

The National Association of Nigerian Students in Sudan (NANSS) recently appealed to the federal government for the evacuation of its members.

“We hereby write soliciting and yearning for the Nigerian Government’s intercession to rescue and send for an immediate evacuation of the Nigerian students that are stuck in the centre of the ongoing war,” NANSS said in a letter.

Dabiri-Erewa in a statement by her spokesman, Gabriel Odu, expressed concern about the situation of Nigerian students in Sudan.

“The Commission has received the letter of solicitation by the National Association of Nigerian Students in Sudan for possible evacuation of students, especially those in Khartoum, the Sudanese capital, ” Dabiri-Erewa said.

Dabiri-Erewa, however, assured all Nigerian students in Sudan and Nigerians living in Sudan that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), which is in charge of emergency evacuations, is consulting with the Nigerian mission in Sudan and other relevant agencies.

She, however, urged them to remain calm and be security conscious.
