Finidi resigns from Eagles’ job as Osimhen blasts

Two days after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced that it was shopping for an expatriate coach to head the Super Eagles, head coach Finidi George, yesterday, threw in the towel.

Finidi has been under fire by Nigerians following the team’s 1-2 defeat to ‘minnows’ Benin Republic in Abidjan after escaping a home defeat to Bafana Bafana of South Africa in Uyo in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The news of Finidi’s resignation came yesterday, just as Eagles’ arrowhead striker, Victor Osimhen blasted the coach saying that Finidi lied against him.  A livid Osimhen in a life post on Facebook, said that Finidi lied about him and his commitment to the Super Eagles. He thereafter rained invectives on the coach and those who share the former Super Eagles’ point of view.

A source close to Finidi told Sports Village Square that the coach sent his resignation letter to Ibrahim Gusau ‘3o minutes ago.’  Finidi was said to be livid that the NFF leadership met with the sports minister two days ago, but failed to mention that players reported late to the camp and that they did nothing to mobilise Nigerians in Cote d’Ivoire to come out to support the Super Eagles in last Monday’s match with Benin Republic.

“He complained that the NFF heaped all the blames on him”, said the source. Osimhen remarked that he got injured in his club’s last Serie A match against Lecce and went to see his doctor.

After the report came out, Osimhen said he called Finidi to inform him of the injury and that he video recorded the conversation. He said he opted to still come to camp, but Finidi refused asking him to stay away and recover. He is however angry that Finidi reportedly doubted his commitment to Super Eagles.
