A fire broke out on Wednesday at Tejuosho Market in the Yaba area of Lagos State.

The fire reportedly destroyed many wooden shanties and properties worth millions of naira.

Eyewitnesses claimed the blaze erupted around 12:30 pm and affected shops and residences situated along a canal within the market.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident in a statement, stating that it received a call at 12:08 hrs, and the fire units from Ilupeju and Sari Fire Stations responded promptly.

The agency said the fire outbreak occurred behind Tejuosho Market and NTA, Tejuosho, involving shanty houses built as an extension to Oba Teju Osho’s house.

It added that several shanties along the Tejuosho canal, comprising shops and residences, were gutted by fire.

The agency also disclosed that the fire originated from unattended cooking gas and spread to other wooden blocks along the canal.

“Firefighters put out the fire and conducted damping down operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and to prevent any potential reignition,” it stated.

The rescue agency also revealed that there were no casualties or injuries reported in this incident.

It added that preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have been caused by carelessness.
