Firm refurbishes school laboratories to boost teaching, learning of science

It was celebration for staff and students of Dolphin Senior High School, Sura, Lagos, recently as they unveiled the refurbished science laboratories donated by Ernst & Young (EY) Nigeria in commemoration of the “2023 EY Gives Back Day” in Lagos.

The renovated laboratories, comprising Physics, Chemistry and Biology, were equipped with modern science equipment, facilities and laboratory reagents.

Speaking at the unveiling, the EY Senior Manager, Talent and Project Coordinator, Mrs Ijeoma Ijere, said the initiative was one of the Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives of the firm, which is committed to give back to the society.

“As a purpose-driven organisation, we are building a better working world, not for our clients alone, but also for the communities,” she said.

Ijere noted that better education, especially science education, where there is a gap and ensuring a friendly environment for the children are part of the critical areas the firm focuses its interventions.

She noted that the Dolphin Senior School laboratory renovation project was not the first intervention as the firm started the initiative in 2014, by refurbishing laboratories and equipping them for schools.

“We work with the education district to select schools for our intervention by asking them what they actually need and want us to do,” Ijere said.

She explained that the firm is focused on public secondary schools where there are yearning gaps. She, however, urged other corporate organisations to partner with EY and the government to lift education in the state by providing the needed infrastructure for teaching and learning.
