Firm trains Customs’ agents on trade procedures

EYIS Resources Limited has trained members of the National Council of Managing Directors of Licensed Customs Agents (NCMDLCA) on the treatment, classification, interpretation and application of international trade procedures.

The training modules featured topics on the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Act 2023 about the World Trade Organisation (WTO), World Customs Organisation (WCO) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

The course content covered 47 areas of international trade, extensively dissecting critical areas like blue economy, advance ruling, authorised economic operator (AEO), special economic zones, single window, and African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), among others.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the three months capacity building programme and presentation of certificates in Lagos, the Chief Executive Officer of Eyis Resources Limited, Lucky Amiwero, said the training was important to enable customs brokers to be in tandem with global trade procedures and practices.

He said the training became imperative considering the evolving dynamics of the maritime industry and the need to keep members abreast with the new laws that affect their operation.

Amiwero described knowledge of port processes and procedures as an invaluable tool that guides all players in the international trade circle. He, however, stated that there were complexities in the Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA), which was part of the Nigeria Customs Act 2023 as well as its procedures and application. He said the complexity also extends to the AfCFTA, the WTO procedure as well as the WCO and UNCTAD.

Amiwero said the training was for the customs agents to understand the complexities in the new trade regime and the implementation, adding that TFA and the AfCFTA have started implementation except for the Nigeria Customs Act, which people have not seen much implementation.
